Can I retain my tag once I have sold my vehicle outside the State of Delaware.

Yes. Applications can be submitted at https://dmv.de.gov/app/dmv/sos.

My tag is expired. Can I complete the sold out of state online application?

No. Your tag must currently have an active expiration date. If expired, you must complete the retention process when completing the titling of your next vehicle.

Who can complete the sold out of state online application?

Only the registered owner(s) can complete the process online.

  • If owner names are separated by AND, both owners are required to complete the application.
  • If owner names are separated by AND/OR, only one owner is required to complete the application. However, the tag will be retained in all names.

What are the fees to retain a tag online?

The fee to retain a tag is $35.00 if your vehicle does not have a lien listed in our system. If there is a lien, there is an additional fee of $20.00.

If you have paid off the loan on your vehicle and you have a lien release:

A tag can be retained with the lien still listed on the vehicle record.

What are some reasons a tag cannot be retained online?

  • The vehicle was not sold to an out of state buyer.
  • The tag is currently expired.
  • The vehicle has an uninsured motorist (UM) case or a UM suspension.
  • Owner has an invalid DL status.
  • Registration suspension or violations (red light violations, toll violations)
  • A vehicle that is registered through Motor Carrier (IRP) or Public Carrier
  • The vehicle has been sold or traded into a Delaware dealership.

I have retained my tag online, but the sale fell through. What can I do now?

You must visit your local Delaware DMV office for additional information, call the Help Desk at 302-744-2500 or you can email DMVCustomerService@delaware.gov .

Once my tag is retained online, is there anything else I must do?

If you have purchased a new vehicle at a dealership:

  • Provide the retention form to the salesperson or title clerk at the dealership. They must include this slip to assure your tag is properly assigned to your new vehicle.

If there has been a private sale:

  • Bring in the retention slip with your title application when titling your new vehicle.
