Vehicle Services Inspections

Delaware's Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)

The DMV technician visually determines if the MIL stays illuminated when the engine is running. If this occurs, your vehicle FAILS the examination. That is, the on-board computer of the vehicle detected a fault that may cause high emissions. Sometimes an illuminated MIL indicates that the vehicle needs service. However, if the MIL flashes, immediate service is necessary. In either case, expensive damage may result if not corrected.

If your vehicle FAILS

A repair facility can perform a complete diagnostic test of the on-board computer system to determine what condition's exist to cause an illuminated MIL and perform repairs to correct the problem. When you return for a retest, be sure to bring the CERT repair form for the DMV technician to review. Only work performed by a Certified Emission Repair Technician can be considered for an Emissions waiver.
